GURNETT: Conscious has strong start in hip-hop scene

Unknown     September 07, 2016
With only one year as a rapper under his belt, 21-year-old Conscious is a surprisingly adept, emerging player in the local hip-hop scene. His debut mix tape, "Waking Up the Neighbors," offers interesting rhymes, honest lyrics and a smooth flow that speak to his inspiration by artists like Drake. As with most debuts, there's room for improvement, but it's definitely a promising start.

The opening track “The Come Up” is a great showpiece for Conscious's Macklemore-like lyrics:
It's like we feed of negativity to function/
I feel purified when I'm away from it all/
If wasn't for this music/
There would be holes in the wall
The lyrics feel honest, the flow is tight and the hook --
No one said it will be easy/
People stay some people leave me/
But I will never/
No I will never lose my mind
-- is all sorts of catchy. That said, the track does have some production flaws. The beat is repetitive and only changes mildly during the hook. The backing lacks a certain inspiration, like someone just pressed the 'on' button on a drum machine. And while Conscious adequately handles singing the hook (with the aid of auto-tune), it would have been more interesting to hear another voice on the track. Some pretty female vocals could have made the song stand out more.

Similarly, “Notice Me” is a decent track but not terribly memorable. Another singer would pump up the hook and really reel listeners in. It's the addition of extra embellishments like this that could take several tracks on this album to a higher level.

Tracks like “Mario Andretti” take the mood from honest to boastful, which doesn't create as strong of an impact. The keyboards are infectious and the hook (while a little cheesy) is catchy, but this brief track has its production issues as well; the backing vocals on the hook sound like a first-take attempt missing any effects that might have made it more interesting.

“Back On” featuring Jake Lilly is the standout of the mix tape. Where some tracks sound like they were rushed in the studio, this song arrives radio-ready. It'll make you bob your head, tap your feet or whatever it is you do when you get into your groove. Conscious sounds great on this track and flows well, and Jake Lilly completely owns his verse. I love the hook, I love the groove, I love the track, period.

The final track, “Latly”(sic), highlights the best of what Conscious does: upfront, personal lyrics. Another ready-to-air track, its production is slick and well thought-out. Conscious handles the hook adeptly and the lyrics ring sincere. This is a song that many people can relate to
Lately I've been searching for a purpose/
Lately I've been feeling worthless
Overall, the seven-track "Waking Up the Neighbors" is a strong start for Conscious. At just 21, if he keeps improving like he has in his debut year, he could be a standout in Buffalo and beyond. Some fixable production complaints aside, his tracks have a strong flow and sense of rhythm, and when the production hits its sweet spot, the sound is polished with hooks that'll stay in your head and beats that'll make you move. If you're into honest, slice-of-life hip-hop, you should check out this mix tape. The future looks promising for Conscious.

Local bands back on for tonight's Canalside show

Unknown     August 25, 2016
BUFFALO -- Sometimes the Internet can be a good thing.

Following massive criticism from the public about the canning of two local opening acts from a free Claypool Lennon Delirium concert at Canalside tonight, the local bands have been added back to the bill.

According to Randle and the Late Night Scandals, the show has been "expanded" to allow for them, as well as fellow Buffalo artists Kickstart Rumble.

The post, made to the Canalside event page on Facebook, states: "OK FANDALS... Great News. With all your buzz on Facebook, the news of the schedule conflict got to the artists Les Claypool and Sean Lennon. They have agreed to expand the show so here is the updated Schedule."

It goes on to state that Randle and the Late Night Scandals will play from 6 to 6:30 p.m., followed by KickStart Rumble from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m., before Jjuujjuu takes the stage at 7:35 p.m. followed by Claypool and Lennon at 8:30 p.m.

Canalside confirmed the change, stating, "UPDATE on tonight's Free Thursday Canalside Concert!: After all the social media comments, Les Claypool and Sean Lennon themselves went to their management teams and made the decision to let the local bands play tonight!"

Local acts pulled from tonight's Claypool Lennon Delirium show

Unknown     August 25, 2016
BUFFALO -- Tonight's free concert at Canalside featuring headliner Claypool Lennon Delirium was slated to feature a pair of popular local bands opening for the duo of Les Claypool and Sean Lennon. Apparently it will not.

The local bands who had planned to perform -- Randle and the Late Night Scandals, as well as Kickstart Rumble -- both say they have been asked not to at the request of the headlining act.

Kickstart Rumble first informed their fans via Facebook with a message shortly before 8 p.m. that said "BAD NEWS: Even though we won the Canalside/Public Battle of the Bands, due to a contract/booking/talent issue, the headlining act refuses to share the stage with a local act, so Kickstart Rumble will NOT be the opening act at tomorrows final Canalside Thursday concert.
We thank everyone who voted for us. We really had a special show planned for you for the big stage.... #winnersturnedlosers"

Randle and the Late Night Scandals confirmed the rumor shortly thereafter with their own Facebook announcement: "Sorry Fandals. With less then 24hrs notice we have just been informed that our scheduled opening for Claypool Lennon at Canalside this Thursday has been canceled .due to the headlining act "refusing" to share the same stage with local opening acts. We were offered a small stage to the side of the venue, with no rain cover but we declined and stand in solidarity with Kick Start Rumble. The Scandals had planned a special show for our fans, and feel this substitution would only compromise the quality of performance we wanted to share with the public. Thank you to all of those that took part in The Public Choice online voting and those who supported us."

Fans of the two local acts, needless to say, were not pleased. Many took to the Facebook page of the headlining act, asking why they refused to share a stage with local acts, getting no response in return. Others went to the event page, being slightly less diplomatic about it. One post asked, "Will I be able to hit Sean Lennon with rocks from the general admission section, or will I have to pay $55 to be close enough to hit him?" Another said "Shame on The Claypool Lennon Delirium for not supporting local bands!"

As for why the decision to pull the local bands from the show? That is yet to be determined. Both acts say it's due to Claypool and Lennon -- sons of Les Claypool and John Lennon -- "refusing to share the stage" with the local acts. However, the Claypool Lennon page on Facebook has no complaints from other shows they've done. Just a lot of complaints from Buffalo's show -- all posted in the last 12 hours. It's hard to believe that there aren't local music fans in Detroit, Mich.; Columbus, Ohio; or Scranton, Pa., all cities the band has performed in recently. In fact a comment from a fan in Detroit notes that "the opening act" went on at 8 p.m. for the show there earlier this month with the headliners taking the stage at 9 p.m.

Surely, more will come out about this last-minute decision to pull two local acts from the show.

For those who were really hoping to see the local acts, Randle and the Late Night Scandal is playing Lockhouse Distillery on Friday and will be performing during Music is Art on Sept. 10. Kickstart Rumble, unfortunately, doesn't have any upcoming local events listed, however.

UPDATE: (3:11 p.m.): Local bands back on for tonight's Canalside show
