Tonight's new track on All WNY Radio is "I am a Winner" by First Ward, a four-piece calling Buffalo home. The band is composed of Dave Harris, Josh Mullin, Zak Ward and Peter Metzler.
In May of 2016, singer/songwriter/guitarist Zak Ward (of Son of the Sun) was offered a gig at 12 Gates Brewery. Deciding not to go it alone, he asked Buffalo music scene veteran Josh Mullin (of The Last Conservative) to accompany him on bass and recent transplant Dave Harris to join him on guitar. Shortly thereafter, drummer Peter Metzler joined too, and First Ward was born.
Their debut EP, "Live at Raven," is a strong introduction to one of the best bands in Western New York. Released while First Ward works on an upcoming album for 2017, Live at Raven is more than just a placeholder; it contains some of the best local music put out in 2016.
The songs have the warm, fuzzy inspiration of early '90s alternative rock. Ward's howling vocals call to mind a powerful combination of Band of Horses' Ben Bridwell and Tom Petty, while the guitars push the songs ahead with beautiful, chorus-filled splendor. Often when listening to an album, I find myself picking out places where perhaps something should be different, but everything on First Wards' debut, from part to instrumentation, sounds perfect where it is. The two guitarists interact with intricate parts that slide together seamlessly in a way reminiscent of Death Cab for Cutie. The bass thumps at just the right frequencies, with a small amount of warm fuzz giving it character and making the bass lines feel extra smooth. The drums are sturdy, uncomplicated and hold the whole thing together. Overall, the music has a great groove, with solid interplay between the drums and bass.
The first track, “I Am A Winner,” is a strong start to the EP. It clocks in at only a minute and a half but feels so complete you barely notice how short it is. “Simple Things” is a blues song at heart, with a dirge-like guitar and a smooth, sliding bass line. The chorus picks up with beautiful guitar parts that help highlight the thoughtful lyrics (“Used up and broken like words from my past/You make me feel like I did when I was 14/Simple rhymes and simple chords help me to say/All that I wanted but I didn’t know how to throw in your face.”)
“Lost,” a song about getting lost together, sounds like a Tom Petty B-side with modern flair. The haunting vocals and interwoven guitars take center stage, with keyboards adding a swirling feeling. You really feel every word of Ward's lyrics. Lines like “We’ll take a drive where satellites can’t reach us/'Cuz when you don’t know the way/That’s when you find the bits of life that make it all right” feel like they're coming right from his soul.
“You're Not Alone,” the final track, is the star of the EP. It's a straightforward song with a little flair of country, a la Rilo Kiley. The track (and EP) ends with a fantastic guitar solo.
First Ward's debut shows them exactly as they are: a group of experienced local musicians who've got the chops and creativity to create something beautiful and unique. I look forward to seeing what they have in store for us in the future.

Editor's note: All WNY Radio will play a track from First Ward's EP, "Live at Raven" at 8 p.m. as our new track for today.
All WNY Radio founder Scott Leffler will return to the airwaves tonight with what will most likely be 60 minutes of nonsense disguised as talk radio.
The talk-radio veteran and publisher of All WNY News will focus on politics and current events in a new weekly show he's calling "Here's the Thing." Leffler spent seven years as a talk show host with WLVL-AM 1340 in Lockport, as well as a much shorter stint on WECK-AM 1230.
Leffler aired a "beta test" of the show Jan. 2 with intentions of making a more public debut on Jan. 9. That more public debut was thwarted due to a mix of sleep deprivation and illness. He assures us that tonight, he'll be rested and healthy.
"Here's the Thing" will air immediately following the new track of the day, which will play at 8 p.m. on All WNY Radio.
The Buffalo Blues Benefit for Veterans is a music campaign to serve veterans who are homeless or at risk of being homeless in Western New York. This show follows a sold-out launch event, on Nov. 16, celebrating the release of the Home CD to benefit the WNY Veterans Housing Coalition, a charity serving veterans in need of housing and other help. The disc, produced by area musician and educator Bob James, includes contributions from Peter Case, Dave Constantino, Mick Hayes, Savannah King, Caitlin Koch, Grace Lougen, David Miller (Miller and The Other Sinners), Robert "Freightrain" Parker, Randle and the Late Night Scandals, the Love Parade, and Doug Yeomans.
Along with selling copies of the Home disc, they are releasing a very special, limited edition album building a bridge from Buffalo 1988 original music scene to 2017.
We Killed McKinley … Again?
No, not the president (he bit the dust here in 1901), but the album. There have been a lot of sampler albums of Western New York music over the years, but few have ever come close to matching 1988’s We Killed McKinley album.
The LP had a title to catch your ear and a line-up of high quality recorded (a rarity at the time) tracks and talent that would prove stellar as well (think Goo Goo Dolls, Mark Freeland, SplatCats, David Kane’s Decay of Western Civilization, the Ramrods, The Rain and the Pinheads).
Now the Buffalo Blues Benefit for Veterans music campaign is bringing back the same title and theme with a new CD featuring a similar lineup of young, dedicated independent Buffalo talent worthy of challenging those on the original album.
The CD, We Killed McKinley: Music from Buffalo, New York 2017, (Buffalo Rock Hall Records) will see the light of – well, night – on this evening. The recording will feature emerging standouts Sixties Future, Sara Elizabeth, the Mallwalkers, TJ Zindle, Stress Dolls, Mom Said No, Dreambeaches, First Ward, Jaw Bone, So Far So Good, The Love Parade, Bethany Fonda and The Naturalists.
The album is co-produced by Bob James, who created the original “We Killed McKinley” with the late Tim Switala, a media and music visionary who came up with the title and concept. This time he’s produced the album with Chelsea O’Donnell, who has featured many of the performers on her local music show on 107.7 FM. As a tribute to the early stars of Buffalo’s indie music scene, the tracks on the new disc includes a pair of covers: Sara Elizabeth performing “What Do I Do” by Bob Kozak (Jumpers and a bevy of other bands) and Bethany Fonda covering "Judy," a song by Bernie Kugel and the Good.
So come on down to Mohawk Place this Saturday starting at 7 p.m. to enjoy some of the best music Buffalo has to offer (including performances from Caitlin Koch, Stress Dolls, Patti Parks, Mom Said No, and Love Parade) while also supporting this great cause.
